"And then a Heero comes along ..."  In dogs the REALLY special ones don't come along very often but we have been fortunate that several have been born here at Vanderbilt over the years.  As a puppy "Heero" ignited the imaginations of breeders, handlers, and judges alike.  He had a way of captivating people with an effervescence and beauty that was somehow more than the sum of its parts.  At shows I would whisper in his ear that he was the brightest light in the place - he absolutely sparkled ... and KNEW it!!  We got used to people staring, and Heero loved the attention.  He would scan the crowd to see who was looking at him and wag his tail ... an invitation to come closer for those who understood 'dogspeak'.  Judges were greeted with bright eyes, a cock of the head, and always the beautiful tail wagging.  And while puppy potential is exhilarating to those of us that breed dogs, it is what the dog ultimately matures to be and how well he both promotes and serves his breed that really matters when the history books are written.  We began breeding him to our bitches and beautiful puppies were born ... Specialty winners and 'special' Champions.  Breeders took notice and bought our best puppies and sent in their own girls. We are thrilled that our Puppy Sensation has grown up to be both a beautiful adult AND an exceptional sire.  At only 3.5 years of age, Heero is already well known for stamping his kids with the TEMPERAMENT correct for the breed.  People-loving, social dogs that are treasured family companions and sparkling showdogs.  He has also shown amazing prepotency in producing beautiful type, correct size, heads and outstanding movement.  He has been fortunate to have some of the breed's best bitches in for service, with more still to come.  We thank these breeders and wish the babies and their owners well in their own endeavors and look forward to following their development and accomplishments. Now as a grown-up Heero's still just one of those dogs that is MAGIC.  Although not currently campaigning, every evening after dinner he demands that I play "showdog" with him.  Vigorously nudging and pawing my pockets for the treats he knows will be there, Heero leaps straight up in the air, lands four square and then steps forward to stretch out into a perfect stack and flashing his classic "Sammy smile".  We replay this game until the bait is gone - his eyes shining and me grinning like a fool - still in awe of the fact that he belongs to me. When the great showdogs go on to be the great producers - well, a breeders grandest goal is realized.  No dog is ever perfect in all parts to satisfy every taste or produce flawlessly - but when true breed type, sound character and good movement can reliably come forth from one dog, a true breed treasure has been found.  Click here to see some of what Heero has produced.  And keep checking back - we'll be updating often.
