We're being asked ... "Where did the 'Standard Insight' Bulletin series go?"
We are pleased to announce that Judi's "STANDARD INSIGHT" series of articles (dealing with International Samoyed Breed Standard comparisons, analyses, and discussion) that originally ran in the SCA Bulletin (debut article appearing in Fall 2003 issue entitled "Standard Insight - SIZE"; Sakura Moses, SCA editor in chief), is now being published by the Samoyed Quarterly (SQ), Hoflin Inc. out of Denver, Colorado. Exerpt below from the COLOUR article that appears in the current issue of SQ which was originally submitted to the SCA Bulletin editor in 11/03, but not published:
Exerpt from the Summer 2004 issue of the Samoyed Quarterly, Cynthia Kerstiens Editor...
Standard Insight - COLOUR
"... What is biscuit anyway? Are we all on the same page when it comes to discussing colour? We know that white means white. For my own part, I can understand white without the superlative “pure”. I believe most of us understand “Cream” to be off-white, or a soft buff. But what the h*ll is this colour called Biscuit that we arrogantly and unabashedly bandy about like the whole world understands what we mean? I've personally seen ”biscuits” of many colours.
To me biscuit “begins” where cream leaves off, and encompasses all deeper buff/tan/toast/powder-grey/peach/peanut butter shades right up to the rich almost toasted red shade seen in the SCA's judges ed materials. In all my years of being involved in Sams (since 1977), I have yet to be taught by any mentor to interpret the Standard to find biscuit a limited or finite colour along the yellow/orange/red scale, and I have YET to be shown a dog that any breeder interpreted to be outside the standard for colour (except the rarely reported black hairs/spots) - YET we list a DISQUALIFICATION FOR COLOUR outside of white/cream/biscuit cominations!! And here we err, and err greatly in our arrogant assumption that judges will automatically have an indepth comprehension of what the word “biscuit” means. ANY disqualification needs to be EXTREMELY CLEAR, or you walk a very dangerous line. A height DQ like we talked about last issue would be simple to implement compared to this - as height is clearly “measureable" whereas colour is not ....."
Read the rest of the article in the current issue. Not yet getting the Samoyed Quarterly? You're missing out on GREAT regular features like Breeder interviews, Show 'n Tell, historical Centerfold, the best glossy paper quality, a dedicated editorial team offering premium service, great (and reasonably priced) advertising and much, much more! Something to think about ... A world with only one Samoyed publication is probably not a very healthy one. Keep options open to Samoyed fanciers by encouraging competition. What colour would you call the famous Anastasia?
According to the current FCI Standard, Anastasia's colour would be judged as faulty. Are you ok with that?
|
From the FCI Samoyed Breed Standard ... "Colour - Pure white, cream, or white with biscuit. The basic colour to be white with a few biscuit markings. Should never give the impression of being pale brown." NOTE: "Colour other than described” is listed as an "eliminating fault" (DQ).

POLL
Do you know of ANY Samoyed that has been DQ'ed on the basis of colour at a conformation Championship show in ANY Country, EVER? If so please let us know.
Do you feel the current AKC/CKC standard colour DQ is necessary?
Do you feel the current AKC/CKC standard colour DQ makes non-breeder judges wary of coloured dogs in general?
Do you think the Standard wording could be improved upon to make the intent clearer to breeders and judges alike?
Looking at the broad picture and projecting the breed's fate into the future, do you support ONE International Standard for the Samoyed?
Send your responses to Judi here for collation into a future article (state whether we can quote you or if you'd rather be anonymous), and thank you for your input!
