"AJAX" may be that once-in-a-lifetime dog for Vanderbilt. From one of our earliest breeding to incorporate the structural strengths of Wolf River into our dogs, Ajax was pivotal to our understanding of "Specials Quality". No he wasn't faultless, nor necessarily the best in every point of structure, but what he did have was that combination of breed type, movement, and balance that in the 'overall picture' equaled a dog of rare and obvious quality. Now long retired, Ajax won handily and regularly under breeder-judges and all-rounders in his heyday. With six all-breed Best In Shows to his credit, dozens of Group 1's, and several SCA National class placements (ALWAYS in the ribbons) - he gave us a taste of big success probably before we deserved it from a sweat-equity point of view, or knew how to properly deal with it. C'est la vie, we did our best.
 Ajax certainly had his detractors and what winner doesn't? In fact the cries of the critics
are often the earliest peer confirmations that you've got something
really reeeeeeaaaaaalllly good on the end of your leash! Now at over 14 Ajax is still healthy, active, and greets each day with the optimism and sweetness of a puppy - albeit just a little slower!
