"At the age of 56 I obtained my first dog. Having taken almost 20 years to convince Marina to have a dog and then pestering Judi Elford for almost a year for a Sammy, the day came. We were to have Drift. We arrived at Judi's to be greeted by an avalanche of beautiful Sammies, one jumped up putting his paws on Marina's shoulders, I became nervous, knowing her fears, in my heart I felt that is it, no dog for us. But she loved him. That was Drift. That was the start of a wonderful relationship with Drift. Drift was always by my side, where I walked, Drift walked. When I drove, Drift sat proudly beside me. If I sat reading or watching TV, Drift sat or lay beside me. I had to keep one hand free just to be able to touch him. He didn't care where I touched him, sometimes I could only reach the tip of his ear or he would lay on his side with his paw up and in my hand. Drift and I loved the closeness. With all the love Drift had to give I decided to share it with others. Drift became the first of our dogs to be a Therapy Dog and the first Sammy Therapy Dog in NFLD with the St.John Ambulance. Drift had no problem passing the required tests for GCC and TD, this came natural to him. Drift made his presence felt at a number of nursing homes, a children's hospital and a psychiatric hospital. His outwardly friendly personality made him welcome everywhere. Drift was a handsome male who could turn a head and win a heart. Drifts picture has on a number of occasions been placed in the coffins of deceased residents of a nursing home at their request or the request of their relatives. We are very proud of Drift. The decision to let him go was not easy. I waited until their was some sign that he was ready. I believe that the bond between us allowed me to recognize when it was time to release him. 26 June 2001. He is resting on our property. He will always be remembered."
